I opened up the scrim to its furthest width and then arranged loose folds on the piece (like a curtain). Then I used a round sponge brush and started tacking it down with paint in various places. Gradually I worked until the entire surface was saturated in paint. This took almost two little bottles of paint! Now I'm out of my favorite cheap color. Boohoo! I think I'll wait a few days to brave the stores to get some more. I dislike holiday shopping crowds.
Anyway, the resulting effect is subtle vertical stripes of texture that vary slightly and will make a nice background. Next, I plan to add some lace accents on top of it. I considered doing the lace in this step also, but because this step used sooo much paint, I decided to hold off so this layer could dry properly. If I can get a decent picture of the texture tomorrow when it dries, I will post it.
In case you're wondering why I'm working in purple so much, I bought a house with purple walls. Yep, purple. It's a beautiful house and the color is nice, but you have to be careful what you put with it. So, I have been experimenting with purples leading up to this wallhanging so that it would be the right hues for my wall. After the wallhanging is complete, I will try to snap a photo of it on the wall so you can see it in context. But it will have to be a nice sunny day to get the colors right, and sunny days are in short supply in eastern Washington at this time of year.

Please do not let the "hard-to-photograph-the-color thing" get in your way of taking photos! It is very cool to see the projects in the varying stages. Those of us who work with L & L will enjoy the photos anyhow, and those who don't will still enjoy seeing the photos of the process.
So is this 3' piece out of actual Lutradur?
Now it is YOUR turn to inspire ME! You have officially done more work with L & L than I have now, lol. Now I want to do some more work with that- after I do a bit of painting, of course.

You're very kind. Yes, the bookmark was Lutradur. The framed piece was not. The wallhanging is Lutradur also.
I ran out of paint, so I had to run to the store today. Ugh. Town was crazy. But the art calls. I put down the lace today on the wallhanging, so a picture isn't available of just the background. But if can get a bit of daylight tomorrow, I'll try to take a photo of its current state. But it's currently dark purple so I'll need good lighting to get anywhere with the picture.
I'll still take the photos, but I wince every time at how bad the photo looks compared to the original.
You're very kind about the inspiration thing. My next few pieces will probably be a little more representational with lace motifs centered and such. But I'm waiting for them . . . I did start one piece with a large Battenburg lace motif cut from an old pillow sham (Goodwill). I can probably take a photo of that too. I'm also considering some pieces with an entire background of hem lace. I like the subtle effect.
About the painting--better you than me! I'm very glad for you with your new toys and your ability, but I'm a total dolt at that stuff ; ). Now, silk ribbon embroidery, that's the other thing catching my eye these days, but now's not the time to delve into yet another new hobby and associated $$$.

Funny about the painting- you act like I know what I am doing!!! I have only been painting for a couple of months- never done any before, but I do love it. Just pushing the paint around is fun!
